Ted’s Preholiday Gingerbread Doggie-Treat Recipe


Ted the NaturalVitalityLiving.com doggie blogger here. I know; it’s early November’too early for holiday treats. But once we’re on the other side of Halloween, my tummy starts grumbling. I created this recipe for my owners and they love it because it makes really healthy treats. I love it because the treats taste great and the gingerbread flavors put me in a merry mood. And oh, packaged nicely, they make great gifts for other well-deserving dogs.

Ted’s Preholiday Gingerbread Doggie-Treat Recipe
Makes 20 treats

Ingredients

1¼ cups water
¼ cup coconut oil
½ cup blackstrap molasses
2 tablespoons coconut nectar or honey
3 cups organic whole-wheat flour or buckwheat flour
½ teaspoon organic cinnamon
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh ginger or ground ginger

Yogurt Icing for Decoration
4–8 oz nonfat plain yogurt
4–8 ounces peanut butter; or substitute 2 tablespoons of honey

Instructions

  1. Melt coconut oil in saucepan over medium heat for 2 minutes and set aside.
  2. Get two large mixing bowls. In one bowl combine water, melted coconut oil, blackstrap molasses, and coconut nectar or honey. In another bowl combine organic whole-wheat flour, organic cinnamon and fresh ginger.
  3. Mix all ingredients until everything is combined. You might need to use your hands to form a doughlike consistency.
  4. Divide the dough into two flat balls; cover with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.
  5. Once chilled, dust the surface of your working area before rolling out the dough.
  6. Roll out the dough to ¼-inch thickness and lightly sprinkle with flour.
  7. Preheat oven to 350° F.
  8. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  9. While your oven is heating, use a doggie-bone cookie cutter to cut out cookie shapes.
  10. Place cookies 1 or 2 inches apart on your baking tray.
  11. Bake for 10–15 minutes.
  12. To make yogurt icing, you can mix 4 to 8 ounces of nonfat plain yogurt with 4 to 8 ounces of peanut butter. If you want to add honey instead, mix 2 tablespoons. To thicken, you can add olive oil, oat flour or potato flour. Then leave in the fridge to chill.

Notes

  • You can add 2 tablespoons of organic carob powder to the yogurt icing to create a chocolate colored glaze. If you prefer a darker color increase the amount of carob.

      Thanks for your question. You can use a zip lock bag and cut it like a pastry bag to smooth over the cookies or a cake decorating tube. If you’d the icing to be thicker you can add whole wheat flour or potato flour to the yogurt icing mixture. How much you add will depend on how thick you’d like it. You can also spoon on the icing to make socks or mittens where the hands and feet are. If you prefer to skip the icing you can ball together small pieces of the dough to make buttons.
