The Other Inconvenient Truth: Agricultural Land Use

Many of us view climate change as the most significant environmental issue we face today. But the University of Minnesota's Institute of the Environment shows us another "inconvenient truth" in the form of the enormous, but seldom confronted, impact of world agriculture. With 7 billion people to feed (and falling short of that by about 1 billion), how will this small planet deal with another 2.5 billion mouths to feed in the not too far distant future?

Steve Jobs — In Memoriam

We believe that it’s appropriate to join the many who have acknowledged the contribution Steve Jobs has made to our lives.

The impact that Steve Jobs and Apple have had on my creative and business life has been profound but it’s in our ability to reach out to each other that the tools which he designed become world changing. Certainly he did not invent the Internet and couldn’t have achieved what he did without countless others, but he simplified the process and made these new tools into art themselves.

GMOs—the Movie

GMO cornMany users of natural products know something about GMOs—genetically modified organisms. But because mainstream media has refused to cover the subject, GMOs continue to be in mainstream food products and Americans, unaware of the dangers they present, go on consuming them as part of their diets.

Filmmaker Jeremy Seifert, currently in progress on an as-yet-unnamed documentary on GMOs, wasn’t particularly aware of them either—and it was a coincidental visit to Haiti, of all places, that ended up tipping him off.

Nutrition, Behavior and Education

There has been a lot of discussion, on-going debate, lobbying and political maneuvering on the subject of school cafeteria food. Jamie Oliver, Ann Cooper, Alice Waters, Michele Obama, Chef Greg Christian and host of other influencers have begun to turn the lumbering ship of school bureaucracy.

Here is a video that shows what can happen to our schools if we fully stay this course—dump and ban the junk foods and sugared garbage from our schools and feed kids properly. The real stories and actual successes along this line sometimes get buried by rhetoric and lobbying efforts. This video should end the debate and let everyone get down to work. Note: once you get past the rather schlocky voiceover it's totally worth it!

inGREEDients—What’s in our foods that is making us sick

In the documentary film inGREEDients, registered nurse and filmmaker, David Burton, discovers an alarming connection between diet and illness while investigating trans fats and hydrogenated oils in America's food supply. Do you know what a partially hydrogenated oil is? What does zero grams of trans fat per serving really mean?

This compelling documentary takes the audience on a time-line journey through the history of human food consumption from prehistoric times to the present, where heart disease is the number one killer of humans and despite recent changes in food labeling laws, pounds of trans fats are consumed everyday.

The film also includes a brief look at heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, the three diseases most directly connected with our consumption of trans fats, chemical food additives, and processed food.

An Eleven-Year-Old Tells Us What’s Wrong With Our Food System

Birke Baehr gave a stunning summation of what's wrong with our food system last year at a TEDx conference. His address was professional, succinct and delivered with a precision that was inconsistent with what we would expect from someone his age—eleven at that time.

We're presenting his address here because his points are still as true and important today as they were nearly a year ago.
