The Just Label It petition drive to compel the FDA to require labeling of GMO contaminated foods in the US has been picking up steam and support. Organic Connections and Natural Vitality, as partners in this push, are very happy to announce that over 400,000 people have now signed the petition. The target is now to get to half a million by the end of 2011. It can be done with everyone's assistance to get the word out.
In addition to the swelling numbers of petitioners, Congressman Dennis Kucinich has introduced H.R. 3553, "The Genetically Engineered Food Right to Know Act," which would for the first time, require genetically modified food to be clearly labeled. This is an additional milestone. In addition to adding your voice to the petition at JustLabelIt.org, we urge you to write to Congressman Kucinich and thank him for this action and give him your support. And, if you're not in Ohio, urge your member of congress to co-sponsor this bill. Citing over 400,000 supporters to date on this issue can't help but get the message across that the FDA needs to be compelled to do its duty.
Remember: 93% of Americans favor labeling of GMO foods. It's not much of a mystery why it has not happened. Time and time again, the power of the internet and personal communications have been able to overcome the effects of long-embedded lobbying efforts. It is happening again here. You are helping to do it. Please send as many people as you can to the links in this post.
Lend your voice.
We are being heard.
It's time to speak louder.
