GMO Right 2 Know Petition Update—We’ve Passed the 400,000 Mark

The Just Label It peti­tion drive to com­pel the FDA to require label­ing of GMO con­t­a­m­i­nated foods in the US has been pick­ing up steam and sup­port. Organic Connections and Natural Vitality, as part­ners in this push, are very happy to announce that over 400,000 peo­ple have now signed the peti­tion. The tar­get is now to get to half a mil­lion by the end of 2011. It can be done with everyone’s assis­tance to get the word out.

In addi­tion to the swelling num­bers of peti­tion­ers, Congressman Dennis Kucinich has intro­duced H.R. 3553, “The Genetically Engineered Food Right to Know Act,” which would for the first time, require genet­i­cally mod­i­fied food to be clearly labeled. This is an addi­tional mile­stone. In addi­tion to adding your voice to the peti­tion at JustLabelIt.org, we urge you to write to Congressman Kucinich and thank him for this action and give him your sup­port. And, if you’re not in Ohio, urge your mem­ber of con­gress to co-sponsor this bill. Citing over 400,000 sup­port­ers to date on this issue can’t help but get the mes­sage across that the FDA needs to be com­pelled to do its duty.

Remember: 93% of Americans favor label­ing of GMO foods. It’s not much of a mys­tery why it has not hap­pened. Time and time again, the power of the inter­net and per­sonal com­mu­ni­ca­tions have been able to over­come the effects of long-embedded lob­by­ing efforts. It is hap­pen­ing again here.
